The University of Hong Kong has established a Common Core Curriculum for all undergraduates to begin in September 2012. The Common Core has four Areas of Inquiry: Scientific & Technological Literacy; Humanities; Global Issues; and China: Culture, State & Society that span the ten academic Faculties of HKU.

Some of the Common Core courses will be offered to entering freshmen on a pilot basis from 2010-2011 onward.

A senior professor at HKU will lead the teaching of each course, and work with Teaching Consultants with academic training in the relevant area who will serve primarily as tutors for small groups of students from multiple disciplines.

The medium of instruction is English. Information about the Common Core Curriculum can be viewed at
http://tl.hku.hk/common-core-curriculum.

Candidates should have a Masters degree in a relevant academic field. Teaching experience in general education at university  level would be a distinct advantage. The possession of a doctoral degree would also be an advantage but is not required.

The appointees will work as a cohort and meet regularly with the Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL) to reflect on and refine the teaching activities in Common Core courses. Duties include conducting small-group tutorials for two courses per semester, marking assignments/examination scripts; preparing teaching materials; supervising student work; developing newcourses; and undertaking other related tasks as assigned. The appointees will be attached to the relevant Faculties.

Applicants should submit an application form (152/708), obtainable at: http://www3.hku.hk/hr/forms_online_applications/vacancies.php, together with a CV and a statement of teaching philosophy, which includes a portfolio of syllabi and descriptions of courses they have taught or co-taught. They should also arrange for submission of three references from senior academics who are familiar with their teaching approaches, skills and experience.

The application package should be sent to the Director of Common Core Curriculum, c/o Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam, Hong Kong SAR; or
emailed to chiting@hku.hk.

For enquiries about specific job requirements, please write to Mr Gwyn Edwards, Director of Common
Core Curriculum (email: gedwards@hku.hk). Review of applications will commence on April 24, 2010, and will continue until all the positions are filled.

Interviews by telephone will be conducted from mid-May. Offers will be made from June. Successful candidates should plan to arrive in HK in mid-August for an orientation and the start of teaching in early September 2010, or in mid-December for the start of teaching in January 2011. Appointments will be made on a two-year fixed-term basis in the first instance, and renewal is subject to mutual agreement.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered. The annual salary will range between US$54,500 and US$85,000.

The appointments will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary, as well as annual leave of 22 days per year and medical/dental benefits. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable. Airfare for relocation may be provided.
