Beating of Chicago teen filmed, posted online

AP,
By SOPHIA TAREEN | Associated Press – 44 mins ago

CHICAGO (AP) — Six teenagers were being questioned by Chicago police Tuesday after a video was posted online showing the brutal beating of a 17-year-old by unknown assailants who can be heard repeating racial slurs and making derogatory comments about speaking Chinese.

On the video, several attackers — many with sweat shirt hoods over their heads and some wearing masks — are seen repeatedly kicking and punching the victim to the snow-covered ground Sunday afternoon on the city's South Side. Authorities said the victim is of Asian descent, but despite the epithets, police said the beating did not appear racially motivated.

Throughout the more than 3-minute video, the assailants, whose racial identities are unclear, can be heard using the N-word dozens of times, and one attacker asks, "Am I speaking Chinese to you?"

The videotaped attack on a teen in Chicago isn't the first to go viral. In 2009, footage of the fatal beating of a 16-year-old honor student was circulated worldwide, providing an example of escalating violence that claimed the lives of more than 20 Chicago public school students in a six-month period.

In the most recent video, the assailants at times used a shoe and a chunk of ice to strike the victim, as he pleads for them to stop in what sounds like broken or heavily accented English. However, the audio isn't always clear in the video, which was posted on YouTube and later removed for violating the site's policy "prohibiting hate speech." At the end of the video, the victim runs away with the assailants chasing him.

The victim was taken to a hospital for a laceration to his lip, bruising and abrasions, authorities said.

Police said the motive was robbery. The attackers allegedly took a pair of gym shoes, the victim's wallet and nearly $200 in cash.

Chicago police spokesman Mike Sullivan said six teenagers were being questioned Tuesday in connection with the beating. No charges had been filed.

"At this time, it does not appear that this incident was racially motivated," a Tuesday statement from the police department said. Chicago authorities declined to discuss further details, citing a pending investigation.

Members of CeaseFire, Chicago's most well-known anti-violence advocacy group, said that it did appear race was a factor in the attack, especially because of the usage of slurs.

"People use the 'N-word' whether they're African American, Latino or Asian," said CeaseFire director Tio Hardiman. "But when you beat up a guy, it's racially motivated."

On the 2009 video captured by a cellphone camera, Derrion Albert is seen being punched and hit over his head with large boards and kicked in the head. The fight broke out after classes let out of a high school on Chicago' South Side.

Four teens were sentenced to lengthy prison sentences last year in the case that sparked outrage around the country. A fifth suspect tried as a juvenile was ordered to remain imprisoned until he turns 21.

Albert's death prompted President Barack Obama to send U.S. Attorney Eric Holder and Education Secretary Arne Duncan to the city to discuss ways to end the violence.

Father of Chicago teen charged in brutal YouTube beating: My son’s ‘the fall guy’

Vicious attack was payback for earlier scuffle, cops say

By Philip Caulfield/ NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Thursday, January 19 2012, 10:13 AM

Raymond Palomino, 17, was charged as an adult with aggravated assault and robbery in the brutal beating of another teen in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago on Sunday. Six other teens, including a girl, were charged as juveniles.

The father of one of seven Chicago teens charged with viciously beating another boy in a snowy South Side alley and then posting a video of it to YouTube says his son was being “made out to be the fall guy.”

Michael Palomino, a 30-year veteran of the Cook County sheriff's office, fumed on Wednesday after a judge slapped his son, Raymond, with felony aggravated battery and robbery charges and set his bail at $100,000.

"He's the only one charged as an adult," Palomino said after the hearing, according to theChicago Tribune.

“They're making it sound like he did everything. It's just one side of the story."      Police and Michael Palomino say Sunday's brutal assault was revenge for an earlier scuffle in which the victim and his friends jumped some of the goons seen in the video.

After the video went viral, friends and relatives recognized Raymond — the only attacker not wearing a ski mask — and called his father, who then called the cops on his son, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

"Being in law enforcement, I just couldn't put my blinders on and not do anything after I saw what I saw," Michael Palomino said.

During the bond hearing on Wednesday, the Cook County prosecutor said Raymond instigated the assault by shouting "Get him!" after a 15-year-old girl lured the victim into the alley.

The girl, who cops say shot the video, along with three other 15-year-old boys and two 16-year-old boys were charged as juveniles with aggravated assault and robbery.

Five of the juveniles are Chinese, and hearings for them were postponed so that officials could find a Cantonese translator, presumably for their parents’ benefit, the Sun-Times reported.

Appearing at the hearing in a gray hoodie and jeans, Raymond Palomino hung his head and seemed to fight back tears as Judge Israel Desierto shot down his lawyer's request for a low bail.

The boy's lawyer, Ilia Usharovich described his client as a "young man with no criminal record" who worked an after-school job at a local grocery store.

"As you can see, he can't even look anybody in the face because he's embarrassed to be standing here," Usharovich said, according to the Tribune.

Michael Palomino said his son was a "good kid" who got decent grades at Kelly High School, but was running with a bad crowd.

"He's had bad moments here and there, but nothing like this before," he told reporters outside the courtroom.

Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said at a news conference on Wednesday that the teens' decision to post the incriminating video online helped cops nail Palomino and the other suspects.

"This is what kids do today, which is ridiculously stupid," he said.
